Visiting your suppliers in China: what it really changes

Most bad import surprises don't come from a bad supplier — they come from a poorly verified one. An immaculate catalog, a competitive price, and a responsive contact tell you nothing about what actually happens on the production floor.

We visit factories for three concrete reasons.

1. Verify that the manufacturer actually manufactures. On sourcing platforms, a significant share of "factories" are in fact trading companies. They buy from a workshop you'll never see, with no control over lead times or quality. On-site, this is settled in a few minutes: production lines, raw-material stock, headcount, output logs.

2. Check that what's being produced actually complies. This is the heart of the matter. The approved sample and the real production run are two different things. Without an on-site check, a gap between the specifications you agreed on and what actually gets assembled only surfaces at delivery — too late to negotiate anything.

3. Talk directly, with no middleman. On-site, negotiation changes character. Volumes, lead times, payment terms, and tolerances get discussed face to face. What takes three weeks by email gets settled in one meeting.

Every visit produces a usable file, not just a verbal report: photos and video of the line and the products being manufactured, a written report specifying what complies and what doesn't, a clear recommendation (release, correct, or reject), and the technical contacts' details.

An inspection costs a fraction of an order's value. A non-compliant order costs you the product, the freight, the customs duties, the storage, and your own customers' trust.

A visit doesn't replace a legal audit, customs expertise, or product certification. It answers one precise question: does the manufactured goods match what was agreed? For anything touching regulatory compliance or taxation, we point you to a qualified professional.

The rule we apply: never pay the balance of an order based only on a promise sent by message. An inspection file costs less than a non-compliant container.
